Our mission is to foster innovation in the space sector in Andalusia, providing startups with access to ESA’s expertise and resources, alongside a vibrant business environment. Our goal is to establish Andalusia as a reference in space innovation by supporting emerging companies that develop space technologies applied to various sectors.
ESA BIC Andalusia is managed by CATEC (Center for Advanced Aerospace Technologies), a leading institution recognized for its advanced technological capabilities in the aerospace sector. As the largest private aerospace research center in Spain, with five locations nationwide, CATEC is instrumental in generating and managing aerospace scientific and technological knowledge. Collaborating closely with academia and industry, it provides a cutting-edge research and development environment, making it an ideal platform for the growth of technology startups.
The regional government, Junta de Andalucía, provides essential support to ESA BIC Andalusia, offering 50% of the funding for the incubator and actively promoting the initiative. Its contribution helps create a strong ecosystem that fosters the growth of innovative startups. Through this support, the Junta de Andalucía plays a vital role in strengthening the region’s reputation as an emerging aerospace hub, encouraging technological development and collaboration across Andalusia.
The Seville City Council contributes by providing the Naves de Renfe building as the incubator’s headquarters, strategically located near the Spanish Space Agency. This prime location enhances collaboration opportunities for startups by giving them access to crucial networks and resources essential for their growth in the space sector. The city further supports innovation and entrepreneurship through various initiatives, helping to build a thriving high-tech ecosystem and solidifying Seville’s role as a leader in the space industry.
The Spanish Space Agency (Agencia Espacial Española – AEE) under the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, provides 50% of the total funding for ESA BIC Andalusia, together with co-funding from the Regional Government of Andalusia and the support of the City Council of Seville. This institutional backing strengthens ESA BIC Andalusia’s integration into Spain’s national space strategy and reinforces Andalusia’s position as a growing hub for space entrepreneurship, within the European network of more than thirty ESA BICs.
Andalusia offers an exceptional environment for startups, boasting a rich aerospace heritage and a dynamic innovation ecosystem that includes high-tech companies, universities, and research centers. The region is home to 147 aerospace companies, generating €2.743 billion in revenue and employing 14,400 professionals, primarily in the province of Seville. This sector is a cornerstone of Andalusia’s economy, contributing 12.84% to the industrial GDP and leading national export rankings. A key role is played by Aerópolis, Spain’s only technology park specializing in aerospace. The Andalusia Aerospace cluster further strengthens this ecosystem, promoting collaboration and innovation.
Seville stands out as a hub of aerospace excellence, hosting 36 companies, 22 research groups with Space activity. The recent establishment of the Spanish Space Agency’s headquarters in Seville solidifies the city’s status as a national and international reference point in the aerospace sector, offering unparalleled opportunities for collaboration and growth.
